Subject: After the Cold War - The Clash of Civilizations
Chapters 3-5,8,10. CHAP. 3 'A Universal Civilization? Modernization and Westernization' - three assumptions that are used to support Western notion of universal civilization: 1) end of history - ascendancy of liberal democracy as universal culmination of historical dialectic 2) globalization - sense that diversity of the world's cultures hides a more fundamental commonality revealed through economic integration and 3) modernity - as expressed in industrialization, urbanization, education, living standards, etc. CHAP. 8 'The West and the Rest: Intercivilizational Issues' - post-Cold War, post-Gulf War. Is Huntington describing or invoking a new political rivalry to replace the enormous vacuum created by the fall of East European communism? CHAP. 10 'From Transition Wars to Fault Line Wars' - elaborates on (but does not apologize for) most contentious statement from 1993 FA article 'Clash of Civilizations?' - "Islam has bloody borders." Adds that Islam creates a propensity to violence. Huntington does not give any attention to the 20th century's two world wars and numerous colonial wars for independence, which Christian nations were the belligerents.
