The 10 Best Places for Soup in San Antonio - Roaming Texas (1)

The weather’s cooling down and, even though SA is never too cold in the winter, we’re still looking for ways to stay warm.

Hey, those 60-degree afternoons can be such a killer to us Texans!

At any rate, if you’re looking for the best soup in San Antonio, steer clear of the super mega chain soup and salad places (that shall remain nameless…) Aside from the diarrhea you’ll get from the buffet (true story), they don’t serve the best soup in San Antonio, anyway.

Instead, check out these local joints to find the absolute best soup in town, whether you want a traditional chicken tortilla or an Asian-inspired bowl of hot goodness.

W.D. Deli

W.D. is a good ol’ deli located in the Broadway corridor. Sure, they’re only open Monday – Friday from 10 – 4pm, but they’re a seriously good lunch spot. While I definitely recommend dunking one of their tasty sandwiches in your soup, you’ll have a choice of four tasty soups to nosh on at W.D.’s:

  • chicken tortilla
  • tomato basil (my personal fave)
  • three-bean chili
  • and a soup of the day.

You can choose between a bowl or a cup of soup, which goes beautifully with chips or crackers.

French Sandwiches

French Sandwiches serves French-Vietnamese food in an admittedly outdated space. But trust me, the soup is legit. This place reminds me of a French bakery my family used to frequent when we lived overseas. Since this restaurant is French-inspired, you HAVE to get a bowl of the French onion soup. They cut the onions a little larger, which makes for a more filling bowl of soup (in my opinion, anyway).

By the way, you can add a croissant to any order. Get’chu some of that buttery goodness, and it’ll change your life.

Picnikins Patio Cafe

I once was stranded at Picnikins for three hours because it’s just down the street from the Toyota dealership, which took forever and a day repairing my car. I have to say, this is a nice place to be stranded at, especially in the cold!

Picnikins is a nice cafe that serves three soups every day: roasted poblano, tomato basil, and chicken tortilla. Best of all, they’re all gluten-free!

Lucky Noodle House

Craving Asian flavors? Lucky Noodle House makes some of the best Chinese noodle soup in San Antonio.

A bowl of seaweed and egg soup might sound out of the norm, but it’s my go-to any time I have a cold. They also serve pork rib and corn soup, tomato and egg soup, and even a spicy fish and cabbage soup.

These flavors are definitely more exotic, but if you’re craving a bowl of hot soup that’s outside the box, you’ve got to try Lucky Noodle House.

Schilo’s

Schilo’s is an old-school German deli. Its soup selection isn’t huge, but boy, is it good!

Schilo’s is famous for its split pea soup, which you can order in either a cup or a bowl. They also whip up an amazing chicken and sausage gumbo, if you want something more Cajun-inspired. Mmm.

Be sure to pair your soup with Schilio’s Reuben or Papa Fritz (named after the family patriarch) sandwiches with your order!

Pho Kim Long

Pho is technically a soup, but I feel like pho is in its own category. I mean, can anything truly replicate the beauty of an excellent pho? No other soup is full of as much umami and perfumed deliciousness on a cold day.

I’m particular about my pho, but I usually order it from Pho Kim Long. I usually go for the veggie tofu pho, but my husband can’t deny the siren call of their brisket pho. Everything comes with beef broth and rice noodles, which are guaranteed to warm you up.

Kungfu Noodle

Kungfu Noodle has a special place in my heart because they make their own noodles. If you want a taste of fresh, authentic Chinese noodles, you’ve got to try their Chinese noodle soups. I usually order the Sweet Potato Noodles and Beef with an order of Pork & Cabbage Buns on the side, but Kungfu Noodle’s homemade dumplings are really good too!

Max and Louie’s New York Diner

Max and Louie’s is a perfect New York-style diner right here in San Antonio.

I recommend the homemade Chicken Matzoh Ball Soup—it’s tough to find good matzoh balls here, but they do it up right. You can also go for Max and Louie’s homemade chili, French onion soup, or daily soup to keep you warm. I also recommend ordering the latkes or potato knish to round out the meal.

First Course Salad Kitchen

First Course’s whole shtick is that they serve healthy food. So if you’re looking for nutrient-packed soups that still taste great (but are kind to your waistline), swing by First Course. Choose from grilled tomato, split pea, black bean, broccoli cheddar, or lentil soup for lunch or dinner.

I recommend pairing it with the Spicy Caesar salad, which comes with challah croutons and crushed red pepper.

Thai Esan & Noodle House

My family jokingly calls Thai Esan “the noodle house” because we can never remember its name for some reason, but boy, do we love its food. I always order the Pad Thai here because the noodle dishes are ridiculously good, but I do like to order a side of soup with my noods, too. Choose from hot and sour, tom saap (beef and tripe), tom kha ga (mushroom coconut), and tom yum (spicy-sour mushroom) soups.
