Crockpot Cinnamon Applesauce Recipe (1)

Today’s recipe is coming to you by request of my five year old, thanks to all of the fun apple activities she’s been doing the past couple of weeks in Kindergarten.

Last week her class made applesauce, and she loved it so much she came home begging for us to do the same. So this weekend, that’s just what we did!

It’s been a long time since I’ve made homemade applesauce, and after making it this past Saturday, I can’t believe I’ve waited so long make it again!

In fact, the last time I remember making crockpot applesauce was when I was teaching my own kinder class about six years ago!

I’m pretty sure I’ve made it at some point since then, but let me tell you this; my house smelled amazing on Saturday, and eating a bowl of this yummy cinnamon-y apple goodness was such a treat!

I’m definitely going to be making this crockpot cinnamon applesauce a lot more often now!

Crockpot Cinnamon Applesauce Recipe (3)

This recipe is crazy easy, too. You just stir everything together and then let the magic happen.

When it’s all done cooking, I just stir mine up with a wire whisk or spoon. The apples fall apart easily and you’re left with a crockpot full of sweet and delicious homemade applesauce!

Oh, and this tastes AMAZING warm! I highly recommend eating it that way (though not steaming hot), but you can also let it cool and store in the refrigerator for later.

This crockpot applesauce makes about 6 servings around 1/2 cup each, which is perfect for our family to eat over a few days time. You can definitely double this recipe if you’d like to make more applesauce, though!

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds apples, peeled, cored and sliced, (about 6 medium apples/I use Gala)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  • Place the peeled, sliced apples into the bowl of your crockpot. Sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon over the apples and mix well. Pour the water into the crockpot and place the lid on top. Cook over high heat for four hours.

  • When cooking time is up, remove the lid and mix the apples using a wire whisk, stirring until smooth, or until desired consistency is reached. This applesauce tastes delicious warm!

  • To store, allow the applesauce to cool completely then place in a sealed container in the fridge. Enjoy!

If I wanted to add lemon to it – would I add it after cooking? Or before? Thanks!!

    • Ashlyn Edwards Reply

You could add it either way!

Hi there! Feels like a silly question, but when you double the recipe, do you double the amount of water and the cook time?

    • Ashlyn Edwards Reply

Hi Heather, yes you would double the water but the cooking time should be pretty close to the original.

So easy!!! I cut 4lbs of Honey Crisp apples into small bits, they were so naturally sweet, I added 1/4 cup sugar (mixture of white & brown)… 1/2 cup water, heaping 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon! Cooked on high for 3.5 hrs… perfection! Mashed so easily and the results are fantastic! Love this idea!!! Thanks!

Excellent, delicious and so easy to make. I used 7 Gala medium-large apples and next time will add one more apple since it cooks down quite a bit.

Hello, I may have gotten too many apples this fall. I have used this recipe for years now and everyone loves the recipe. However, I have so many Cortland apples that I may have to preserve some through the winter. I was wondering if it would be wise to freeze the apple sauce to keep it longer?

    • Ashlyn Edwards Reply

Yes, freezing the applesauce would be a great idea. It freezes very well!

  18. Leigh Ann Doolin Reply

I made this yesterday. The only thing that I did different was to increase the cinnamon to 1 teaspoon. I love this recipe. I left a little texture in it. It’s delicious. I’m going to make a large batch and freeze it. As a bonus, your house smells wonderful while it’s cooking.

Made this today and it came out perfect. Prefer it a little less sweet so used 1/4C sugar for 4lbs of apples , 1/2C water and 1/2tsp cinnamon. Cooked on low for 8 hours. Used immersion blender when done to get the consistency out family prefers. Will make again for sure.

  20. Erin Reply

We made this exactly as directed and it was delicious. It was not overly sweet, and the kitchen smelled amazing.

Tastes amazing!! I doubled the batch cuz I had so many apples. Now I would love to use this applesauce to make applesauce muffins. So going to give it a try.

    • Katie Reply

Did it take longer to cook when doubled?

      • Ashley Reply

I ended up only cooking my apples for about 3 hours but they were still very tender. I don’t think you will need to double your time if you do multiple batches of apples at a time in your crockpot on high.

      • Kristy Reply

I doubled the recipe and only cooked the normal time.

Start by toasting a half-teaspoon of your favorite ground baking spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, allspice) in a small skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Transfer to a small bowl to stop the cooking, then stir in a pinch or two of the spice into your applesauce, adding more to taste.

Adjust to taste as necessary—for sweeter applesauce, stir in more maple syrup (I usually add 2 tablespoons); for more spice, add more cinnamon; for more complexity, add another teaspoon of vinegar.

Can you overcook applesauce? ›

Actually . . . yes. The texture won't necessarily suffer, but the flavor will: the more you overcook them, the less of that tartness the apples will retain. Don't worry, though– if you follow the 5-minute timing directions in this recipe, you'll be just fine.

What to do if you add too much cinnamon to applesauce? ›

What apples to avoid when making applesauce? ›

For applesauce, you essentially want the opposite—apples that will cook down and mash well to create a flavorful sauce. At the same time, avoid apples that are mealy in texture and turn to mush when cooked down. Many cooks avoid Red Delicious for that reason.

How do you get the tartness out of applesauce? ›

Taste; if the applesauce is too tart, add more brown sugar little by little until the flavors are balanced. (Note that no two batches will ever be the same; the flavor will depend on the tartness of the apples you use.)

What thickens applesauce? ›

If you don't have time to wait for reduction, then the best method is to mix arrowroot or tapioca (or both) with a little bit of apple juice or apple cider.
